It is Finished!

John 19:16-30

John tells us that Jesus’ last words on the cross were, “IT IS FINISHED!” (v.30). As the other gospels make clear, this was not the whimper of a dying man but a loud, triumphant shout (Matthew 27:50, Mark 15:37, Luke 23:46). The Greek word is tetelestai, a word that was stamped on receipts to show that a debt had been “paid in full”. The perfect tense of the verb signifies an action that has already been completed, with results that will last. So, Jesus’ shout literally meant, “It has been finished, it is finished and will remain finished forever”.

This cry denoted that Jesus had accomplished the mission He came to Earth to fulfil. He had fulfilled the Mosaic Law and His sacrificial death freed man from its strict requirements. The penalty for sin had been paid once and for all. People could now be legally justified (i.e. declared “Not guilty”) and welcomed into God’s presence – not on the basis of their own works but by identification with His Son. Satan’s power over humankind was broken; those who had been in bondage to sin and death could now walk free.

Colossians 2:13-15 “And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, [14] having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. [15] Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”

If you have received Jesus as your Saviour and Lord this incredible salvation is yours but, like many Christians, you may not be living in the fullness of it. Satan has no right to meddle in your life any more but he is a thief and a liar and, while this fallen world exists, he will do what he can to keep you in ignorance about the extent of the abundant life that Christ has made possible for you.

John 10:10 tells us that Jesus came that we “may have life”, and “have it more abundantly.” The Greek word translated “abundantly” is perissos, which means “outstanding, over and above, overflowing, or extraordinary in number, size, or quality”. Are you living in the abundance Christ has won for you?

The truth is that “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law” (Galatians 3:13). This curse is everything that Satan brought into this world when man sinned (see Deuteronomy 28:15-68). So, if you are experiencing the curse in your life in the form of sickness, financial lack, family strife, or any other kind of struggle (other than persecution for your faith) the enemy is stealing from you.

We who have aligned ourselves with Christ in His death and resurrection are also seated with Him in the heavenly places (Epesians 2:4-6). That means Satan is under our feet. So let us make sure we keep Him in His proper place! Christ has won the victory for us; we simply need to enforce it in our lives by faith.

1 John 5:4 “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith.”

Prayer

Father God,

When I think about all that Christ has won for me through His death on the cross, I can only bow before You in adoration, thanks and praise. Thank You that I am redeemed from bondage to Satan, sin and death. Thank You that I have been credited with the righteousness of Christ and that I am welcome to stand before You without condemnation. Thank you that I have been restored to the destiny You planned for humanity before the Fall. What a wonderful salvation is mine.

But, Lord, I recognise that I have given ground in my life to the enemy through my ignorance and unbelief. I pray that You would open the eyes of my understanding to see who I am, and what I have, in Christ. Help me to recognise the attempts of the evil one to steal my abundant life and to resist him by faith, so that my life might bear witness to Your amazing love and grace.

Amen.
