For me keys have two ideas associated with them. First they are a symbol of authority and power. And second, they unlock doors!
More than twenty years ago now Jill and I set out on a project that even now I have to pinch myself to believe we actually carried out. Redundancy from my well paid job meant that we became unable to continue living in our house. So we agreed to sell it, move into rented accommodation and to buy some land and have a house built in France – where such things were much cheaper. The outcome was, eventually, a beautiful house in rural Quercy in SW France. I can remember the keys being handed over by the company that built the house for us – now proud but almost unbelieving owners of a French residence to do as we liked with and no mortgage!
Those keys unlocked a new season in our life. At the house we ran week-long discipleship courses called “Made for a Purpose”. During the course we explored God’s intentions for the lives of Christ’s disciples today, sharing Biblical truths that brought a new sense of belonging and purpose in their lives, unlocking them for Him.
Jesus is referred to as the Key of David. He is the fulfilment of the Davidic Covenant, an eternal promise from God to King David. The promise can be found in 2 Samuel 7. God promises that King David and his descendants will always rule and that He will provide a secure home for the people of Israel. The fulfilment of this covenant came with the coming of Jesus Christ to earth. He was from the line of David and in His coming, His life, death and resurrection, he returned to humankind the blessings of being citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven – if we accept Him as Saviour and as Lord – here on earth right now and into eternity. Some unlocking! He not only provides us with eternal life but with it both worth and purpose, now.
It reminded me of some words in the old hymn “There is a Green Hill Far Away”: “There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin. He, only, could unlock the gates of Heaven and let us in.”
He has let us in!
