Genesis 12:1-4
When I pick up my 10 year old grandson from school he usually comes out amongst a gaggle of friends and I have to call him to come out from among them in order to walk home with me. In these verses we see God calling out Abram from the midst of others. This ordinary man was living in Haran with other members of his idolatrous family when he heard the voice of the Lord telling him to leave his family, his native land and all that was familiar and comfortable and go with Him to a land that He would show him.
The Lord’s plan for Abram was that he would become the prototype of all who walk with Him by faith. He told him that if he was obedient, his descendants would become a great nation, he would prosper and have influence and blessings would overflow from him to “all the families of the earth”. As a childless man with a barren wife, those promises took some believing. Yet Abram chose to believe what God said and set out on this journey into the unknown. The writer to the Hebrews later commented:
Hebrews 11:8-10 “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. [9] By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; [10] for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”
Instead of trying to build a city and a name for himself (as men did at Babel, Genesis 11:1-9), Abram chose to trust the Lord and let Him determine his destiny. Our walk with God always starts with the same call – to let go of our own plans and ideas and to follow His leading instead. That is the beginning of a journey that will always include tests and refining but will lead us to purpose and destiny.
Have you answered that call or are you still in the driving seat of your life? Many people have been treated badly by people in their lives, and that can make it difficult to trust but I encourage you today to let go and let God take charge. He will never let you down.
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; [6] In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
Prayer
Lord God,
Thank you that You know me personally and that You call me to travel through this life with You. Help me to let go of doing things my way and trust You to lead me in the paths I should take, knowing that Your plan for me is good.
Amen.
