Verse 5: O Come, O Come Thou Lord of Might

Can you picture a particular place where the scenery and weather have combined to fill you with awe? A majestic place perhaps, that makes you feel small, maybe even insignificant. I can picture such a place.

Last February Jill and I travelled up the coast of Norway, crossed the Arctic Circle and reached the northernmost point of the European mainland. A remote Arctic landscape called NordKapp away north in Norway’s Finnmark region. High cliffs form the northern edge of a snow-covered plateau. A strange winter light prevails during the short days and spectacular Aurora Borealis lights up the sky during the long nights. And then frequent and heavy snow showers sweep across the Arctic Ocean and whip up large icy drifts on the ground high above the sea.

How often landscape and weather combine to remind us of the mighty God who created it all!

Yes, Nordkapp was certainly mighty and awesome!  But not as awesome as the presence and power of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the One who overcame sin and death to show His might – a baby who would become the divine and powerful ruler who now sits at God the Father’s right hand. A true overcomer!

And it is because of His overcoming that I can experience the ability to be an overcomer in my own life. Not in my own strength but only by claiming His authority and relying on the power of His Holy Spirit working within me. I need to remind myself of key scriptures to ensure I do this; here are two that I value greatly to guide and remind me:

Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’  Says the Lord of hosts.” ( Zechariah 4:6)

and

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5,6)
