John 1:43-51
At this early point in His public ministry Jesus was calling to Himself the men who would become His inner circle of twelve disciples. One of the first to receive an invitation to follow Jesus was a man called Philip, who immediately went to find his friend Nathanael. He was eager to tell him about his new Rabbi whom, He claimed, was the One whose coming was prophesied in the scriptures. Nathanael’s question, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (v.46) was a genuine concern. Not only was Nazareth an insignificant village not mentioned in the scriptures, but the prophet Micah had specifically foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). (Of course, due to the census that took place at the time of His birth Jesus was indeed born in Bethlehem rather than Galilee, but Nathanael did not know that yet!) However, although he was somewhat sceptical, Nathanael agreed to come and meet Philip’s new Master.
When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards Him He greeted him as if they had met before, declaring him to be an honest man with no hidden motives. Not surprisingly, Nathanael was somewhat taken aback and asked Jesus how He knew Him. In response Jesus made an even more surprising statement: “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you” (v.48). Even though Jesus was not physically present when Philip found him, He knew exactly where Nathanael was and what he had been doing. That little snippet of supernatural knowledge was enough to get past all Nathanael’s concerns and he declared Jesus to be “the Son of God” and “the King of Israel” (v.49). Jesus answered him by saying that Nathanael had not seen anything yet. There were much greater things to come.
When we look at Jesus’ words to Nathanael it is helpful to understand that it was common in those days for men to study the scriptures under a fig tree. It is likely that Nathanael was doing just that when Philip arrived. It is even possible that he was studying the story of Jacob’s ladder to which Jesus refers in v.51 (see Genesis 28:10–22).
Nathanael was clearly a sincere man who loved the Old Testament scriptures and wanted to please God. His encounter with Jesus shows that His integrity and His desire to know God better had not gone unnoticed. He brought his doubts to Jesus and found that, in His Presence, they all melted away. It seems that he, like his friend Philip, became one of Jesus’ close followers. (It is thought that he is the man referred to by his family name of Bartholomew in the other gospels). As such, he would have seen Jesus perform many miracles and been one of the people filled with the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.
In His humanity, Jesus did not know everything about everyone He met but only as the Holy Spirit gave Him insight. The fact that God showed Him where Nathanael was at a specific time, as well as what he was doing and why, reminds us that God sees each one of us and knows what is in our hearts. He has seen you reading His word; He knows when you fast and pray in your secret place (Matthew 6:6,18), and He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). Whatever your circumstances and the desires of your heart right now, you can be sure that God knows and has heard your cry.
Prayer
Father God,
I thank You that, even when the people around me do not truly know me or see my heart, You always do. You understand me like no one else does. You know my doubts and fears and You are calling me to come closer to You, just as You called Nicodemus. Lord help me to be transparent before You as Nicodemus was. I pray that if there is any hidden motive or deception in my heart You will reveal it to me so that, like him, I too can be a person who is without guile.
