Matthew 6:25-33
In today’s reading Jesus makes another of His startling statements: “Do not worry”. You may already be thinking, “If only it was that easy!” The truth is that most people worry. They fret about having enough money to buy the things they need or want. They feel anxious about their family relationships, their health and the state of the world. They worry about whether people will like them, whether they will keep their job, or what their future will look like. But worry is not good for us. When anxiety becomes habitual it upsets people’s sleep patterns and has a negative effect on both their physical and mental health. So how can we obey the command that Jesus gave to His followers not to worry?
What makes the difference is where we choose to focus. If our eyes are fixed on the problems and issues of this natural world, and what we must do to survive in it, we will become stressed. The truth is that those concerns were never meant to be ours to carry. Instead of looking around us, Jesus encourages to look up at our loving, Heavenly Father who takes seriously the responsibility of caring for His children. He clothes the flowers of the field and feeds the birds, whose value is far less than ours. As those who are citizens of His Kingdom, surely we can trust Him to take care of our needs?
We do not find it easy to trust in a Person we cannot see. That is why Jesus addressed His listeners as, “You of little faith”. But the truth is that, because Jesus commanded it, we know that it is possible to live in this world without succumbing to anxiety. When we are able to lean on God’s care and provision, we will not worry. And it is important that we learn to do that because, while we are focused on what we want and how to get it, we will not be fulfilling the mission that God has given us to do. In His parable of the sower Jesus said that “the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and (we) become unfruitful” (Matthew 13:22).
Our God is a trustworthy God. He loves us and will never leave us or abandon us. When we make Him and His Kingdom work our top priority He is always with us (Matthew 28:20).
1 Peter 5:7 (NLT) “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”
Prayer
Father God,
Please forgive me for the times when I have allowed the cares of this world to take my attention away from You and Your Kingdom. Thank You that You are a loving Father who loves me and cares for me. I know that You will provide for all my needs because You always keep Your word. Help me to put all my worries into Your hands so that I can focus on doing the work of Your Kingdom.
Amen.
